Verbindung Palatia 2023 - 2025
For the past three years I have photographed a German Männerverbindung in Heidelberg. The project began with hesitation and distance. These fraternities are often described through fixed assumptions either political, ideological, or exclusionary. Entering the house with a camera, I carried those expectations with me.
What I encountered complicated them. Many of the men I met had arrived for practical reasons rather than ideological ones: some simply needed an affordable place to live during their studies. Through repeated visits, shared meals, and long evenings of conversation and singing, the house slowly revealed itself as something more ordinary and more complex than the narratives surrounding it.
